Daniel Pink’s forthcoming book on motivation – can’t wait to read it!

Many of you may know Daniel Pink’s new book: “Drive; the surprising truth about motivation”, is due soon.

I can’t wait to read this one when it comes out!

I’ve just stumbled on a video of Pink’s discussing the research. There’s some great quotes in there. My favourites?

“There’s a mismatch between what science knows and what business does”.

“Those 20th century rewards/motivators we think are the natural part of business, do work, but only in a surprisingly narrow band of circumstances.”

“Those “if–then” type rewards (carrot stick) only destroy creativity.”

“The secret to high performance isn’t reward and punishment, it’s that unseen intrinsic drive: the drive to do things for their own sake; the drive to do things ‘cos they matter”. (I’m nodding so furiously by now I look like the nodding dog!)

“The science confirms what we know in our hearts.” (Why is it so many things in management or business seem to ignore some fundamental principles about human potential, learning and motivation?)

And he confirms what I’ve taught and believed since I started my journey in learning and development over 30 years ago – that people want
