DO YOU WANT MANAGEMENT TRAINING WHICH “STICKS”,

AND WHICH GUARANTEES RESULTS

OR YOUR MONEY BACK?

If you do – then we believe we can help.

A STRUCTURED, YET FLEXIBLE, MANAGEMENT PROGRAMME

Starting FEBRUARY 2010, we’re running a structured, 5 day open management programme for anyone who wants to become an outstanding manager.

Developed from our now hugely successful one day overview workshop, this programme means you can:

  • Reduce the time wasted trying to deal with underperformance
  • Avoid, and minimise conflict, tension, gossip, and low morale – regardless of circumstances.
  • Allow your staff to get on with their jobs, confident they’ll do it well, leaving you to get on with other things.
  • Build a culture which fosters customer focus, conscientiousness, creativity of thinking and a “can do” attitude.
  • Give yourself more time – because you can delegate more.
  • Avoid making mistakes when you’re selecting and recruiting – whether it’s new people to join the team, or ensuring you choose the right mix of skills for a project.
  • Learn the biggest mistakes managers make when they try to motivate their people – so you never make them.
  • Understand just how you can set up a simple process which will massively increase the motivation, commitment and engagement of your staff.
  • Learn how to ensure you manage the talent you have, in the best way possible. Your staff will feel they are being developed, and your organisation has highly skilled people who are loyal.

Each day builds on the last – but you can attend whichever days you wish, to fit your own needs, as each day is a discrete unit on its own.

Each day gives you some insights into the latest or most relevant research for the topic but, more importantly, leaves you with some extremely practical techniques, tools and ideas to help you effectively implement some of this back in the workplace. PLACES ARE LIMITED TO AN ABSOLUTE MAXIMUM OF 20, TO ALLOW HIGH PERSONAL ATTENTION, SO YOU DO NEED TO BOOK EARLY.

SO, WHAT DO YOU GET IF YOU REGISTER?

1: Practical and proven people management techniques – not jargon

Whether you attend one or two days or all five, we’ll teach you some simple, practical and proven techniques you can implement immediately back in the workplace, which will have a positive impact on the culture and working relationships in your team.

Really apply some of what you learn on these days, and you could see tangible results within weeks, in terms of better working relationships, less hassle and greater performance.

2: An opportunity to hone 4 critical people skills

Research shows, get good at just four key skills, and apply them consistently, and you’ll become a top – performing manager.

The skills which may well have got you to where you are now, are more than likely, not the same skills you need now you are managing others. How good are you at these 4 skills? Do you know what they are?

We’ll teach you – but more importantly, we’ll give you resources, and ideas and techniques to help you actually implement these skills in the real world.

3: Building you a great reputation

Before you were a manager, your reputation ( and often your career prospects) rested on your own efforts.

Now, your reputation is inextricably linked to the people you have working with you. If they give of their best – then you build a good reputation. If there’s high staff turnover, poor performance or attitudes, tensions or conflict, all of a sudden, it reflects on you.

Your reputation as a manager rests largely on how you manage your people.

We teach you how to get the people management not only “right”, but so effective your reputation will be exemplary. If you have any aspirations to go even higher, then you need to know it is your people skills which will be the most critical deciding factor in whether or not you have the capability to take on greater management responsibility.

In fact, what you learn on these days, will help you be more effective in any situations where it is critical you successfully influence or persuade others.

4: A personal action plan for your success

We don’t just believe in sharing new knowledge, ideas and techniques with people.

Knowing what you need to do, is less than 30% of the battle.

Applying what you know is what will make the difference.

Each day comes with a preparatory survey, getting you to consider some issues before you start, and more importantly, works with you on the day to ensure you leave with a personal action plan of what you need to do, to help you take things forward for you.

Immediately following the day, you’ll receive a follow up survey asking you to note down the key learning points, your key goals, and what immediate steps you plan to take in the next 8 weeks towards achieving those goals.

5: Help to keep you on track

Whether you sign up for one day or all five, you’ll receive the following to help keep you on track with your action plan:

  • A complimentary copy of a book we feel should be on every manager’s bookshelf.
  • A useful manual summarising the key learning.
  • Access to a free forum where you can continue to share ideas, ask a question or tell us your success stories.
  • An mp3 copy of the workshop you attended, so you can replay it on your ipod, in your car, or your lap-top, whenever you choose.
  • An opportunity to purchase the downloads and manuals for any workshops you cannot attend.
  • A follow-up survey for you to complete 4 & 8 weeks after the workshop, asking you what actions you’ve taken and what results you are seeing.

ATTEND ALL FOUR WORKSHOPS AND YOU’LL GET A FIFTH COACHING AND FACILITATION WORKSHOP COMPLETELY FREE

WE KNOW THIS PROGRAMME WORKS

We know because we’ve run some elements of it now with literally hundreds of managers, from all sorts of businesses – and over 90% of those attending not only felt they derived real benefit from attending, but they asked for more: something which allowed more time and gave them even more practical techniques.

So we’ve spent over 3 months developing a complete programme and looked at how we can adapt it into a range of packages, to allow flexibility, and cater for everyone, ranging from those who just want to dip their toes in, to those who are looking for a complete and comprehensive programme with all the “bells and whistles”.

These open programmes were designed to provide a mid-way package; content rich, but ensuring opportunity for interaction and ongoing personal learning and application. Extremely attractive where bringing a programme in-house is just not viable or appropriate, where you would appreciate gaining a wider perspective from sharing with others in different organisations, or where you simply want to try out another supplier, with no risk to yourselves, other than your time.

HERE ARE JUST SOME OF OUR TESTIMONIALS

(And if you want references, we’ll be happy to provide them.)

“On booking the ‘How to be an outstanding manager’ seminar I was rather dubious due to the fact that I hadn’t experienced any of their events before.

The course itself was superb. I expected the word ’seminar’ to mean that you would stand at the front of the room and ‘talk at’ the audience. Instead I was pleasantly surprised at the blended learning approach which included activities such as group discussion and interview scenarios.

The course content was excellent, particularly the information relating to motivating people. It was very informative and encouraged me to take the information back into my place of work and use it accordingly. The information was also presented in such a passionate, enthusiastic way that I sat on the edge of my seat raring to go.

Overall the course served its purpose but delivered so much more by giving the ‘how and the why’ as well as techniques to apply to specific scenario’s. If I had a criticism it would be that the course was too short as the manner in which it was presented struck a chord with me and left me wanting more”.

An excellent workshop which challenged my own management traits and gave me encouragement to let my staff find their own way.

Amy – Director: Benchmark Recruit

An interesting event, well and dynamically presented and very interactive. Very relevant and interesting content.

Geoff Roberts; TSA

I would strongly recommend this workshop to anyone who manages staff. Shona demonstrates a passionate delivery, clear knowledge and experience and interesting anecdotes to back it all up. The insight we gained as a result will enable us to improve our productivity, and contribute to a happier work environment.

Louisa H Walker; Director; Benchmark Recruit

This was a very good workshop with plenty of practical tools and techniques to match the theoretical concepts we covered.

Helen Cund; Partnership Manager, South Yorkshire Sport.

You gave me a great insight into how to manage other people, as well as giving me the confidence to ask to be managed this way.

I really enjoyed the ‘How to be an Outstanding Manager’ course. It was a very interesting and timely course as it covered some of the key obstacles I am currently facing at work. Even though I’ve been a manager for over 15 years I heard new ideas, such as the ‘12 Questions that matter Most’ (surprisingly simple!) and the ‘6 Fundamental Human Needs’ have really struck a chord. I’ll be able to use these ideas every day to help with my interaction with my team (and even my boss!) and really feel it’s going to make a difference to my performance and that of my team. I’ve recommended it to all my peers when I got back into the office today…………….

WE’RE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT MAKING A REAL DIFFERENCE

WE EVEN GIVE YOU A

GUARANTEE.

Yes, that’s right: a guarantee.

We understand it’s a risk for you – to take time out of your busy schedule, and to invest any sort of money, in training. Very often, even training which you enjoy and learn something from, can end up as a dusty tome on your bookshelf, which you never really get round to doing anything with, let alone consistently applying any of the techniques.

Which is why we do what we can to help keep you on track – even though this is not a “bells and whistles” programme. (See point 5 in the “What you get” section.)

Also, even if you just attend one day, if you don’t feel you’ve learned techniques which, if applied, could make a real difference to your ability to manage and influence others more successfully, we’ll refund your fee – no quibbles.

We can’t say fairer than that.

WHAT’S IN THE FIVE DAYS?

DAY 1: SETTING (AND MANAGING) EXPECTATIONS

Have you ever faced the following problems?

  • You have to manage someone you used to work alongside.
  • You have a persistent problem with performance or attitude with one or more of your staff.
  • A member of staff wants promotion, but you don’t feel they’re ready – or maybe even not really right for the role.
  • There’s massive change going on, and staff are feeling stressed, anxious and vulnerable.
  • There’s a culture of cliques, gossip, or negativity.
  • You’re accused of micro-managing.
  • Staff seem bored or apathetic.

Truth is: behaviours are affected by the environment. Inall my years of experience, with thousands of individuals, and dozens of organisations, I’ve never yet come across anyone who got out of bed and said, “I’m going to do the worst job possible today”.

When you, or anyone else hired them, presumably, you hired them because they were the best person for the job?

So if they are not performing or behaving as you would like, the issue simply isn’t one-sided: it starts with you, and the environment you create.

In this one-day workshop we help you work on the first and foremost critical skill of an outstanding manager: setting and managing expectations.

Get this right, and you’ll create a basis for a culture which is dynamic, open, creative, supportive and high performing. It requires a clarity, vision, setting of boundaries and personal confidence, to foster the culture you decide you want.

We’ll share some ideas and techniques with you on this day, to help you get really clear about your expectations, to feel confident about communicating these expectations to your staff, and we’ll share with you some of the most common mistakes managers make which can cause problems for performance. We’ll also give you some tips about how to delegate more effectively, so you give staff some sense of autonomy within their role.

You’ll go away with your blueprint for the culture of your team.

DAY 2: MOTIVATING YOUR PEOPLE

Have you ever faced the following problems?

  • Trying to motivate staff whilst you’re cutting back workforce and/or bonuses or asking them to work longer hours for no financial reward,
  • Trying to establish an incentive scheme which actually does incentivise – and which incentivises the right behaviours.
  • Staff who are apathetic or going through the motions – the “9 to 5 ers.
  • Tensions, gossip or open hostilities or conflict within a team which threaten performance, swallow your time, and de-stabilise and de-motivate everyone involved.
  • A couple of tricky staff whose behaviour or attitudes threaten to de-motivate others.
  • A boss who de-motivates you?

This workshop deals with the second critical key to becoming an outstanding manager: motivating your people.

You’ll learn exactly what motivation is, why people become de-motivated and some simple techniques to increase the loyalty and commitment from your staff – whatever the external circumstances throw at you.

You’ll understand exactly why and how conflict arises, how your own response to conflict might be making things worse, and more importantly, how to reduce and minimise tension within your team, or with other important relationships, such as with your own line manager.

DAY 3: DEVELOPING YOUR PEOPLE

Have you ever faced the following problems?

Trying to deal with a member of staff who simply doesn’t seem “right” for the role.

  • Wondering how to conduct a motivating appraisal/performance review.
  • What to say when someone asks you for career advice.
  • How to help support the development and training of your staff.
  • Frustration at someone’s persistent under-performance.
  • How to develop people when you’ve very little budget.
  • Uncertain where to start – you’ve never done this sort of thing before, but you’re being expected to help devise personal development plans with your staff.

This workshop deals with the third critical skill of an outstanding manager: developing your people.

There is much talk these days of “talent management” and “continuing personal development plans”, but how exactly do you assess talent in the first place? How do you “manage” it in a way which benefits both the individual and the organisation? And how do you help to build meaningful and motivating personal development plans for the individual staff for whom you are responsible?

This one day workshop first starts with YOU. You’ll learn a definition of talent which is perhaps new to you, and begin by considering your own talents and strengths. You’ll learn what magic can happen when people play to their talents and strengths – and the consequences in terms of both performance and motivation when they don’t.

This workshop will shake up and challenge a long-held perspective that development is about focusing on improving people’s weaknesses, in order to make them “more rounded individuals”.

And you’ll leave with some specific techniques you can use to help you make the most of both your own talent, and that of those you manage.

DAY 4: SELECTING AND RECRUITING THE RIGHT PEOPLE

Have you ever faced the following problems?

  • You have some staff who are clearly “square pegs in round holes”.
  • You want a more effective way of interviewing candidates so you get it “right” more of the time.
  • Staff turnover is higher than you’d like.
  • There’s a lack of creativity, or a problem getting projects finished on time.
  • Project management is a nightmare!

This workshop focuses on the final critical skill of an outstanding manager: the ability to place staff where they will be most effective.

This isn’t just about recruiting into the team or company, this is also about good project management, from a people perspective. You’ll learn why an understanding of talents and strengths is critical to achieve more accurate placement. You’ll consider what talents and strengths are most needed for the staff you manage, and you’ll learn how to conduct a talent interview as part of your interview process.

You’ll learn how to encourage and recruit for diversity of styles, and why moving up may not always be the best route for every individual.

You’ll consider wider challenges in terms of reward and recognition practices so you select and recruit in a way which benefits both the individual member of staff and the organisation.

DAY 5: PUTTING IT ALL TOGETHER – A COACHING OPPORTUNITY

This day is ONLY for those who have attended all four of the other days.

The content of the day will be flexible, and we will solicit your views before the day about any specific topics you would like to have more time to cover, so as much as possible it is built around your most pressing needs. However, the day will provide a framework which allows you to:

  • Share issues, challenges and success stories with others from the full programme. Don’t underestimate the value of this. This is a mastermind group of like-minded individuals, all wanting to improve and hone their skills – as a coach who is in two mastermind groups myself, I know the value of mixing with people who share my challenges, but who are supportive and encouraging. If you’ve attended all four workshops, and you make full use of the free forum on the website, you will have already made contacts and friends with others who can continue to support and coach you after the programme is over.
  • Get answers to some of your most frequently asked questions;(We’ll also solicit this before-hand, and produce a special handout for you which pulls together practical tips to deal with these FAQ’s)
  • Learn some simple coaching techniques. You’ll coach each other on the day – but what you learn will help you use some of these techniques with your staff back in the workplace.
  • Devise your own personal development plan! With all this focus on how you develop your staff, you’ve not had time to focus on you! So we’ll give you a little time to work on applying some of the stuff you’ve learned to how you want your own career to go over the next few years!

THINK THIS IS TOO EXPENSIVE?

Ruth Spellman, CEO of the Chartered Management Institute says this about training:

“If you think it’s expensive to have really competent people, try incompetent.”

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST YOU IN WASTED TIME DEALING WITH CONFLICT? WITH DISCIPLINARY OR GRIEVANCE PROCEDURES? FINDING, RECRUITING AND TRAINING NEW STAFF, BECAUSE EXPERIENCED STAFF ARE LEAVING?

Here’s some statistics for you to consider:

  • 80% of UK managers have been asked to do things at work for which they feel they should have been given training beforehand, and managing people was top of the list. (ACAS, CIPD report, June 2009)
  • Half of training and development at work is now initiated by line managers, rather than through HR or Learning and Development departments – yet many of these managers have no training to help them do this effectively. (ACAS, CIPD report, June 2009)
  • Numerous studies show people leave bosses – not companies.
  • Poor people managers generate more time spent trying to resolve conflicts – and on average 13 days is lost on each disciplinary case, and 9 days on each formal grievance submitted. (CIPD 2007)
  • 25 years of Gallup research into top performing organisations shows line-managers play the most critical role in the overall performance of the organisation. (see First Break all the Rules by Marcus Buckingham)
  • A Gallup study of one large, multi-outlet retailer in the US showed in the top 25% of stores where managers met the criteria we cover on the course :Sales were 4.56% over budget for the year – by a whopping $104 million Profit was up by 14% (the bottom stores missed their goals by 30%)They retained an average 12 more staff per year than their counterparts – saving a massive $27 million in finding, hiring and training the new employees.

IF THIS COURSE SAVES YOU EVEN ONE DISCIPLINARY PROCEDURE, HELPS YOU RETAIN EVEN ONE MORE STAFF PER YEAR, OR IMPROVES PERFORMANCE BY JUST 10% YOU’VE MORE THAN COVERED THE COST OF ATTENDING ALL FOUR DAYS – LET ALONE ONE.
