Setting your vision as a manager – a video you might like

manager, management, workplace motivation, employee engagement

As a manager, what kind of vision do you have for the way things are in your team/workplace?

How clear are you about the kinds of behaviours you want to see – and those you don’t? How clear are those you work with about what the values and beliefs are in your workplace? When they go home, or they talk about their workplace – what do they say?

More importantly, will they say what you want them to say?

For those who work with me, or who come to my “How to be an Outstanding Manager” programme, you’ll know I believe one fo the first things ANY manager needs to do is to get clear about your expectations for your team.

I call it the “How we do things around here” conversation.

It doesn’t have to be complicated – in fact – the more complicated you make it – the less likely people will  engage! But get it right and the benefits are enormous.

Take a look at this  video I found on You Tube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LD72GzaxxuI

Some lines I particularly liked:

“If you can connect with all of the facets of the human heart then people will follow you to the ends of the earth as a leader.”

“When people identify with the vision they:

  • like the team they’re in
  • are proud of the values
  • go home at night with a good feeling inside
  • feel like bringing their best friends into the same organisation

When people are engaged, behind your vision there is a STRONG correlation with:

  • customer satisfaction
  • staff retention
  • low sickness
  • productivity
  • profitability

What was particularly interesting is how getting an increased engagement score of just 3% will increase customer satisfaction by 10%! It’s exponential!

So – as a manager – have you set your vision for “the way we do things around here”?

Have you communicated this to your team? Have they had some input? do you have their buy in?

Enjoy the video!

Warmest regards,

Shona
