LEARN HOW TO MOTIVATE OTHERS, ENCOURAGE OWNERSHIP AND RESPONSIBILITY, CHANGE THE CULTURE AND ATTITUDES OF YOUR STAFF AND INCREASE PERFORMANCE THROUGH SOME SIMPLE COACHING TECHNIQUES.

In sport, coaching is an essential part of developing outstanding performance and team working. The psychology behind it, however, is equally applicable to the world of business, and coaching has become a bit of a buzz word in recent years as a result. Many management courses now include some element of coaching skills in their agenda, and there’s an increasing amount of theory and research into the whole area.

As coaches ourselves, we know the value of coaching. We have invested considerable time, money and energy into learning the theories and developing and practising these skills.

However, you don’t want, or need theory. – nor do you have hours to spare. What you do want are some ideas and simple techiques you could put into effect immediately, and which would help you understand how to use coaching in your every-day managing.

Which is why we’ve developed this one-day workshop, to give you the basics you need to know to help you begin to think and act like a coach.

Sure, in one day, we can’t teach you everything you need to become an outstanding coach! It’s taken us a lot of study, and practice to develop and hone those skills ourselves.

However, we can ensure you understand the power of coaching techniques, why it’s worth the effort, and how and when you can apply them for maximum benefit.

Translate even one or two techniques into practice back in your team, and you will see significant benefits; in the quality of the working relationships, in reduced conflict, and in greater commitment and enthusiasm.

Here are just some of the common problems or questions we’ve encountered across dozens of organisations and with hundreds of teams, which this workshop can help you solve

I’ve got a team going through massive change at the moment. Can a coaching approach help?

Absolutely! In fact, it’s the most effective way to manage change.

One of the key things you’ll learn on the day is how coaching is, first and foremost, a way of being, rather then a way of doing. It’s about a mindset and a set of beliefs about human potential which encourages solution based thinking, rather than focusing on problems, and which encourages every single individual to take responsibility and ownership for what they do, and how they deal with circumstances.

When you’re facing uncertainty and change, using coaching techniques and strategies is the most effective way of keeping your team on-side, and avoiding a “blame” culture, and/or apathy – both of which are “death” to good performance.

This course will help you understand the mindset and beliefs you need to be a good coach, give you a framework to help you use coaching techniques, and some tips about coaching strategies which will help support people through change.

“I understand what a sports coach does – but how does that translate into business?”

Many sport psychologists and coaches say a game is won or lost in the dressing room.

What the team, or individual sportsman is saying to themselves; their state of mind before the game, or even when they’re points down mid match, will be the single biggest determinant of the outcome. Sports coaches know they need to understand and work with attitudes, mindset and behaviours as much as they do with helping their players hone their physical skills. In fact, Steve Redgrave, the five times Olympic gold medallist puts his success down to 40% skill and 60% mindset.

In the “game” of business, that state of mind is just as important.

The most outstanding managers understand this. Research into the highest performing managers shows they are extremely effective coaches. They place a high importance on developing and motivating their staff, knowing the time and energy they devote to this will reap them massive rewards in terms of loyalty, enthusiasm, creativity, commitment and outstanding results. They understand their success is dependent upon the achievements of others – so they work on helping them get better at what they do.

Two of the four critical skills of an outstanding manager are the ability to develop and to motivate their people. Coaching is the most effective way of doing just that.

“Isn’t coaching all a bit “fluffy bunny” psychology really? In this tough economic climate we need people to just get their nose to the grindstone and get on with their job don’t we?”

Actually, the last thing coaching is, is “fluffy bunny” stuff! In fact, coaching is probably the most challenging way of managing and developing people – but it’s the most satisfying, the most targeted and the most effective way of improving performance.

More importantly, in this tough economic climate, we actually need to use a coaching approach MORE, in order to survive.

You’ll experience coaching for yourself on the day – you’ll see it’s about having belief in people’s ability, about having high expectations, about playing to strengths for maximum personal and team benefit, and about developing “can-do” mindsets, which don’t buckle under pressure.

Soft and cuddly, it most definitely is not!

“How can you coach staff who are resistant to it, or who have been used to a culture where they are just told what to do?”

Clearly, changing the traditions and habits of a team or organisation can’t happen overnight! If you have a culture where staff have been so restricted by policies and procedures, or afraid to voice their opinions, or where open discussion or creative thinking has never been encouraged, then you’re going to need to plan your strategy for turning this around over time.

But that’s no excuse for not making a start. The benefits for you, never mind the team and the bottom line, are so worth it. You’ll have less tension or conflict for a start. You’ll have willing and enthusiastic staff. You’ll be more likely to hit target. And you’ll make the right impression with the boss.

Whilst this is only one day, we don’t dwell on theory. A large part of the day is actually coaching and being coached yourself, on something which is a challenge or issue for you. You will actually experience the coaching process – and if this is a challenge for you, you’ll be able to see how challenging but productive it can be.

In fact, the very best coaches, are those who constantly coach themselves – who “walk the walk” and who are not afraid to take on challenging goals, such as changing culture and mindsets.

You will come away from the day with at the very least, some ideas and plans as to how you could begin to make changes in your own team and the wider organisation.

Frequently asked questions

When and where are you holding this workshop?

We currently plan to hold this open workshop twice in 2009.

The date for the first workshop is Wednesday, October 7, 2009.

The date for the second workshop will be announced later in the year.

All our workshops are held at The Source, near Meadowhall, Sheffield. This is a great venue, easily accessible (just off junction 34 of the M1)

Are you planning to hold these in any other venues?

There is the possibility we may extend our key-skills workshops to London, but as yet no definite dates have been agreed.

The venue in Sheffield is well situated and within easy reach of all the major cities in the north, as well as being easily accessible by rail or by car.

I can’t attend that day, but I would like to come along.

Get in touch with us to register your interest, and we’ll ensure you are first to know about any further dates.

We have a number of managers interested in attending this day. Do you run this workshop “in-house”?

Yes, we do. If you would like further details, do contact us and we’ll be delighted to discuss your requirements.

What is the cost of the workshop?

Attendance is £445 + VAT, and includes all your course materials, lunch and refreshments. It’s a great opportunity to meet with other managers, and share ideas, and all participants qualify for an opportunity to try out an innovative, simple, but effective on-line survey with their team, to help you objectively measure current team dynamics. With this knowledge, you can target and plan the actions which will help you create a formidable and high performing team. This on-line survey would normally cost you £10 per head to administer – but it’s available to you as part of your delegate fee. We think you’ll find this an extremely useful people management tool.

Budgets are very tight this year, and every penny needs to count. We have no experience of your organisation as a provider of learning and development. How can we be assured this is a good investment in both our time and our money?

We understand exactly how important it is that learning and development is enjoyable, interesting, useful, but most of all, applicable and measurable.

Everything we do is geared to exceeding our clients’ expectations, and to consistently striving for ways in which we can not only help people make real and lasting changes which will benefit them personally, and their organisation, but which can be measured.

People skills are traditionally very difficult to measure. It is for this reason we’re incorporating the on-line measurement tool you’ll have free trial access to as a participant on any of our workshops. This exciting, cost-effective tool, and other resources you can acess within the on-line programme, can help you, as a manager, measure where you are now, and the progress you and your teams are making.

We also guarantee our work. If you don’t feel you have experienced great value, we will refund your fee – no questions asked.
